Focus and scope
Revista Abierta is an editorial publication in Spanish of Escuela Mónica Herrera, specializing in the fields of communication, marketing, and strategic design. The journal aims to serve as a platform for faculty, researchers, and professionals in these areas to share and disseminate the findings of their research and academic reflections, fostering a better understanding of these disciplines, their relationship with others, and their social and market impacts, with particular emphasis on El Salvador and Latin America.
The journal’s objectives are:
- To integrate institutional and course-based research into programs that build complementary and sequential knowledge.
- To define research lines and agendas grounded in the realities of communication, marketing, advertising, and strategic design, contributing to the academic mission while projecting new knowledge to society.
- To develop and foster a research culture within our academic community.

History
Revista Abierta was launched in 2007 as an annual publication featuring research from the Escuela Mónica Herrera community, with the purpose of sharing knowledge generated in the field of communications. These studies were carried out by its members, including faculty members, professionals, and students.
Since then, the journal has evolved and expanded its calls for papers to include professionals, academics, and researchers from other institutions. Since 2020, it has been published exclusively in digital format, and since 2024, undergraduate thesis articles are no longer accepted. Only articles derived from master’s or doctoral theses are considered, and these cases are indicated within the publication.
Target audience
Academics, students, and professionals in communication, marketing, advertising, design, and related fields, as well as the general public interested in these topics.
Publication frequency
Revista Abierta is an annual open-access publication made fully available online to the academic community and the general public every November. The journal does not charge authors any fees for article publication or at any stage of the editorial process, including layout and dissemination of the articles.
Funciones del comité editorial y científico
The Editor is responsible for overseeing all areas of Revista Abierta’s production, including editorial, legal, and dissemination aspects. The Editor convenes the Editorial Board for regular meetings and maintains constant communication with the Scientific Committee, reviewers, and collaborators.
The Editorial Board is tasked with ensuring the quality and diversity of the content published in the journal. It safeguards the originality, relevance, and appropriateness of the texts in each section, collaborates directly with the Editor, and monitors compliance with editorial policies.
The Scientific Committee is composed of specialists in the field of communications who hold international recognition and have extensive experience in academic and research activities.

Protocolo de interoperabilidad
Revista Abierta provides an OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative – Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) interface, a feature of the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform. This enables interoperability between different platforms and repositories through metadata exchange.
